Our environment

Marble Hill HouseOne of the most important issues for me is the quality of the local environment. For me, the environment is not just about carbon emissions, but about the sights, sounds and smells that local residents come in to contact with on a daily basis.

To care about the environment in its truest and broadest sense means prioritising:

  • Planning – Bad planning can be a blight on the landscape, increase flood risks and reduce the amount of green space available to our communities. I was to see Twickenham cope with its ever increasing need for housing in a way that is sensitive to the existing community and their needs. This is why I oppose building housing stock on Twickenham Riverside.
  • Vandalism – This includes public drunkenness and anti-social behaviour. It is noDeborah Thomas in Whittonisy and disruptive to residents and can bring down an area very quickly. The local environment is diminished when ordinary residents cannot use their own streets after dark because of the selfishness of others. It is too easy to see estates such as those in Whitton and Hampton being tarnished by graffiti and vandalism.
  • Litter – Whether this is the way household waste is collected or how much rubbish there is on the streets, litter is a smelly, unsightly health hazard, which administrations must do their utmost to contain. Overflowing dustbins and uncollected rubbish is unacceptable in 21st Century Twickenham.
  • Noise – Under no circumstances should peoples’ sleep and day-to-day life be disturbed by unchecked Heathrow expansion. We all accept that Heathrow exists and probably use the airport for work or pleasure, but not at any cost. Sleep deprivation is not only tiring, but can least to a host of other medical conditions. This makes noise pollution, whether from the airport or from inconsiderate neighbours a major blot on the local environment.
