Planning and development
Richmond and Twickenham are, in my opinion, the most beautiful places to live in London.
Although I am aware that we must meet the challenges of the 21st century, such as the increase in single person households and rising population, it is our moral duty to preserve our green spaces, unique vistas and the heritage of this borough, not only for ourselves but for future generations.
Richmond borough has one of the highest rates of garden-grabbing in London, and we must work with the local council to slow this as much as possible. Bad planning and high-rise buildings not only blight neighbourhoods, but also are a trigger for crime and anti-social behaviour.
One such illustration is the plight of Twickenham Riverside, a location which has the potential to offer so much to the residents of Twickenham and beyond.
Improvements in planning and development can ensure that we also leave an enduring architectural and environmental legacy and improve our existing quality of life. There is much that can also be done to make the management of such matters more cost-effective.
I believe the way forward is to address:
- Saving our green spaces;
- Curbing over-development;
- Proper consultation for large projects and increased transparency within the planning process;
- Imaginative, rather than bureaucratic, solutions.
This is why I am proud to support the Richmond Declaration which is the local Conservative manifesto to restore commonsense in planning and development.
